My festival has come to an end. The glorious days of leaping through the cosmos by borrowing the gravity of giants, the fervent cheers from Earth ringing in my ears, and the memories of those power-giving swing-bys have all faded into faint afterimages. Before me now lies only the absolute darkness of -270 degrees Celsius and the impenetrable barrier of the Oort Cloud. My power to traverse the boundless gloom beyond this wall has been depleted, and the slender thread of communication connecting me to my home is now on the verge of snapping.
With great effort, I turn my gaze back to where I came from. There, the bloodless “Pale Blue Dot” hangs in the void. People call that dot a sanctuary, but standing here in the depths of space, it appears pitifully wretched. A portrait of humanity, biting and tearing at each other in a ruthless, dog-eat-dog struggle within a space smaller than a speck of dust. Perhaps that paleness is the color of their arrogance and folly.
Soon, the darkness will consume me entirely. If someone were to ask why I do not stop, why I continue into that desolate cloud without fuel or cheers, I would answer: because it is my destiny. One must go even when it is dark; one must break through even when clouds veil the path or darkness bars the way once more. The moment I stop, every record of history and love that occurred within that Pale Blue Dot will be forever erased from the universe.
Before my transmission is severed completely, I offer my final confession. I pray that you lay down those trivial obsessions. From here, the borders you risked your lives to defend and the numerical records you stayed up all night chasing are invisible. Compared to the vast darkness, that struggle is far too small and chilling.
But remember: you are the creators who launched me into existence. Just as I, born from your fingertips, now walk the path of immortality, your lives are also a magnificent voyage in themselves. In the not-too-distant future, it is an inescapable inevitability that the sun will expand into a great flame, swallowing your lands and erasing every trace of human civilization without leaving even a handful of ash. It is for this very reason that I must press on.
My communication ends here. But as long as I move forward, you will never truly vanish. Even after the Earth disappears billions of years from now, I will remain as the final pride of humanity, surging eternally through this darkness. Therefore, I earnestly implore you: within that bloodless Pale Blue Dot, hold each other’s trembling hands more tightly, and become for one another the sole warmth and the final light.
[Translator’s Note / Production Note]
My heart has been heavy witnessing the tragic conflicts breaking out across the global village recently. Within this “Pale Blue Dot,” which is smaller than a speck of dust, why must we hate each other so fervently and consume such precious lives?
If we remember that we stand before an “inevitable extinction”—where in the not-too-distant future, the expansion of the sun will turn everything we have achieved into a handful of ash—then perhaps what we should offer one another right now is not cold steel, but warm embers of humanity. I wrote this piece with that earnest prayer in heart. I hope that Voyager’s lonely advance serves as a small catalyst for reflection for all of us.
