A 60-Year-Old Korean “Mister” and His Shocking Discoveries About Brazil

If someone asked me why I suddenly became interested in Brazil, my answer would be a little embarrassing. It wasn’t because of a trip, a business opportunity, or years of academic study.

It started with a single number.

One day, while checking my blog statistics, I noticed that my website had appeared in search results in Brazil. Nobody clicked; it was just a few impressions. Yet somehow, the word “Brazil” caught my eye, and a long-forgotten memory from middle school came rushing back.

Back then, I learned about Rio de Janeiro, one of the world’s most beautiful natural harbors, and wondered what such a place looked like. To me, Brazil was simply the land of football, Pelé, and yellow jerseys. For most of my life, that was all I knew.

It always felt like a completely different world — seasons reversed, day turned into night. Yet over the years, I began to discover pieces of Brazil in the most unexpected places.

✈️ Discovery 1: The Advanced Wings of Embraer

Like many, I had always associated Brazil mainly with agriculture and livestock. When thinking of advanced aircraft manufacturing, countries like the United States or those in Europe usually come to mind first.

Then, I learned that South Korea’s Air Force had selected Embraer’s C-390 Millennium (also known in its tanker configuration as the KC-390) as its new military transport aircraft, beating out Lockheed Martin’s C-130J and Airbus’s A400M in the competition. That genuinely surprised me. South Korea is the first country in Asia to operate this aircraft, with the first unit expected to be delivered before the end of 2026. Brazil, it turns out, is a nation capable of building world-class, high-tech aerospace technology — competing head-to-head with American and European giants and winning.

🥋 Discovery 2: Resilient Spirits — Lula and Jiu-Jitsu

More recently, my interest expanded toward the people and culture of Brazil, revealing a deep-seated resilience:

  • President Lula: Rising from poverty, losing part of a finger in an industrial accident as a young factory worker, and returning to the presidency after years of political turmoil and imprisonment — his life story left a profound impression on me.
  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ): Learning about the Gracie family and their influence on modern combat sports showed me a martial art that values leverage and technique over brute strength. It’s a testament to the nation’s unyielding spirit.

🍗 Discovery 3: A Hidden Connection on the Dinner Table

There was another surprise closer to home. One of South Korea’s ultimate favorite foods is fried chicken. Yet many Koreans don’t realize just how dependent that chicken is on Brazil. According to South Korean agricultural trade data, Brazilian chicken made up about 86% of all chicken Korea imported last year — and in the first months of this year, that figure climbed even higher, to nearly 90%. Counting both domestic and imported chicken together, Brazilian chicken still accounts for roughly one in every five chickens consumed in Korea.

In a way, Brazil had already found its place at our dinner tables long before it ever appeared in my blog statistics.

✍️ Closing Thoughts: A Boy’s Curiosity Reborn

When I look back, I realize that I still know very little about Brazil. Rio de Janeiro, Pelé, Samba, President Lula, military aircraft, chicken exports, and Jiu-Jitsu — that is probably the full extent of my knowledge.

Yet Brazil somehow feels more fascinating the more I learn. Perhaps what surprises me is not Brazil itself, but how limited my own understanding of the world has been.

The boy who once wondered about Rio de Janeiro from a geography textbook has now passed his sixties. Today, that same curiosity has been awakened again by something as simple as a few impressions in a search report.

I do not know what Brazil will surprise me with next. But whenever I see the country’s name appear in my statistics, I find myself paying a little more attention.
